Born in Ireland in 1849, Archbishop Denis Joseph O'Connell studied at St. Charles College of Baltimore and the American College in Rome. He became Rector to the American College at Rome in 1884. From 1903 to 1909 he served as Rector of the Catholic University of America. He became Archbishop to Richmond in 1912 and remained there until 1926.
